The Gritstone Trail

From Disley, a lovely stone-built village with an excellent dining pub, the Ram’s Head, follow the 35 mile (56km) Gritstone Trail into the Lyme Park estate, inhabited by red deer and the location for the TV dramatisation of Pride and Prejudice. Climb through the moors up to the Bowstones, the remains of Anglo-Saxon crosses, perched high above the Park. The views from here are breathtaking – Manchester spread out one way, the Cheshire Plain another, the peaks of Kinder Scout and Shuttlingsloe to another. The mile walk continues to White Nancy, the famous landmark overlooking Bollington at the end of Kerridge Ridge, to Tegg’s Nose Country Park, and on to the Staffordshire Border.
